The Jae H. Kim Taekwon-do (TKD) Institute in Ashland has been a great place to get regular exercise and learn new skills. The instructors are patient, consistent, and knowledgeable. They challenge me in small enough increments that I can frequently celebrate successes, and they continually give me new goals to work on. In the past two years, they have taken me from knowing absolutely nothing about martial arts to being able to practice nine forms, defend myself in sparring against many kicks and punches, and engage with a wide variety of sparring partners. I have grown in confidence and I absolutely love the challenges!

The style of TKD taught by the Institute is practical and energizing, with good reasoning behind the ways we do the movements. The instructors care about safety and avoiding injuries of all kinds. The regular practice of TKD has strengthened my core, balance, and lower body, especially. Unlike when I used to work out at the gym, I never get bored practicing TKD, because it is always a mental challenge in addition to a physical one. When I get to the end of a TKD class, I feel the benefits of both good exercise and extended mental focus.

I enjoy the community at the Institute, too, where the environment is challenging but not competitive. Everyone is supportive of one another. As a mom, I am especially impressed by the children and teenagers who train in TKD: the advanced students (of all ages) display self-discipline, confidence beyond their years, and mutual respect that is noticeable and admirable. One of the most memorable pieces of encouragement I ever received at the Institute was from a 10-year-old red belt, when I was just starting out. I was impressed with his assurance and perspective. My own daughter has also grown in terms of her self-discipline, focus, and confidence since beginning at the Institute, and it has been a joy to watch her develop her sparring skills.

If you’re looking for a great place to work out, or a great place for your child to stay healthy while developing their confidence and sense of accomplishment, I highly recommend the Jae H. Kim Taekwon-do Institute!
